Risks on the Internet and School Bullying

Do you think you are safe online? Do you really know who you are talking to? Teenagers from IES Montevil receive a talk about the danger of the Internet.

On Wednesday, the 13th of May, we had a talk of the risks on the Internet and school bullying. A policewoman explained the modern problems about cyberbullying, grooming and sexting. She spoke about how now there are a lot of problems with kids that use new technologies. She said that there is a lot of danger.

The policewoman showed us a video about Amanda Todd. She sent a sexually-explicit photo and she had to change her school and city three times because her friends started to laugh at her and she drank a toxic liquid but she didn’t die. She began to cut her arms and some years later, she died.

To understand better what we are writing about, here there are some terms that might help you:

Cyberbullying is the use of cell phones, instant messaging, e-mail, chat rooms or social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to harass, threaten or intimidate someone. Cyberbullying is often done by children, who have increasingly early access to these technologies. The problem is compounded by the fact that a bully can hide behind an electronic veil, disguising his or her true identity. This secrecy makes it difficult to trace the source and encourages bullies to behave more aggressively than they might face-to-face.

Sexting is the act of sending or receiving sexually-explicit images and messages, typically between cell phones.

Grooming is the criminal activity of becoming friends with a child, especially over the internet, in order to try to persuade the child to have a sexual relationship with you.

Now you know about Internet dangers, so you must be careful when you use technology.
